After forty years living and working in Asia and the Pacific, aid worker, author and composer Lansell Taudevin has a unique insight into places most people may dream about, and a few that some do not even know exist!
That insight is laced with humour and the well crafted cynicism of experience.
the experiences in this book range from coping with snakes in sleeping bags in the forests of Borneo to counseling axe murderers in Bougainville, eating goat with a warlord in Baluchistan, dealing with frightened refugees in East Timor, , avoiding ghosts in Sumatra, attending shugdrels in Bhutan, watching atolls sink in Butaritari, and musing on the foibles of Po Toi and Macau.
The title of the book comes from the author's 1985 composition, Golekana, a cantata based on texts from the Javanese mystics.

I am not a big fan of biographies nor short stories since good reads in such forms are hard to come by based on my personal experience, or either that, biographies of famous people can sometimes become too motivational/inspirational that kind of lose the focus on the story itself? Anyway, cut to the chase, i have decided to give this book a go, because the somewhat non relevant book cover and the book title makes me curious, and perhaps lower my expectations on it, and thus lesser disappointment. Of course the price seems reasonable to give it a chance, and also myself a chance to appreciate short biographical stories.I must say I am far from being disappointed. The book offers the reader a chance to 'experience' what the author had been through when working as an Aid worker in various parts of Asia, with some pretty unique situations he had faced. There are takeaways especially in some chapters, so at least i do not feel that i have wasted my time and money on this one. The author's humour helps too.
Like most short stories, the book may suffer from lack of flow between the events in the different parts of asia. Somehow it did not stop me from putting it down between chapters, probably because its written in an easy to read way. I am glad I didn't or there is a chance i will not pick it up again if I pause for too long, due to the lack of continuity in short stories.
Anyway, this is also my first review, mag be a tad bit too long. The bottomline is that I am very glad I found a 'jewel' out of the jungle of literature, of diverse entertainment and knowledge value. I am 'moltivated' now to scout for more!
